Meet The Maker
Corey Mason - Da Auld Kirk
Corey is a veteran of Australian navy. When he left, after twelve years of service, he decided to have a complete change of scenery and so, almost five years ago, he moved to Shetland to join family and friends who were already settled here.
He divides his time between converting the Sullom Kirk in to a family home and working on his crafts.
Corey is based in a shipping container on site at the Kirk. It's small but is ideal while he looks for the right workshop which will hopefully come along soon.
Lets take a look at Corey's work ...
Corey originally started out taking photos and printing them on to mugs and jigsaw puzzles but over the last couple of years his crafting interests have evolved and he has moved into woodwork.
As you can see from the photo above Corey starts from scratch cutting and shaping the wood before etching it and finishing it.
Corey spends time developing new ideas and creates his design to suit the piece of wood he is working with. He has a talent for highlighting the natural beauty of the wood and has incorporated resin in to some of his pieces to stunning effect.
